In the year 1908, the Venus of Willendorf, a 4" sandstone carving, was unearthed from the banks of the Danube River in Austria. She was carved from stone foreign to her discovery location. One could assume she was valued and carried by her creator or members of the tribe in their wanderings. Her first impression is fecundity. What if, as well as fertility, this totem also stands for universal mothering of the planet–the water, the land, the sky and all the inhabitants?

Medusa in Sanskrit means sovereign female wisdom. Based on that piece of information, I decided that this powerful little Venus needed to become the first true symbol of Medusa. She is the genesis of DIG: An Imagined Archeo-logism. Medusa's current incarnation, according to DIG lore, is the two foot version of the Willendorf Venus, The Willendorf Update. This Medusa is still the earth's guardian, as she has been for over 22,000 years. Ever hopeful that mankind will come to it's senses, she is blown wide open, heart broken but still standing.
